Our vision for the congress in Tromsø 2011 was inspired by life and nature in northern and rural areas. It raises a double challenge for all doctors in general practice: To care for people where they are living, and where they are in their lives. The congress programme addressed this from scientific, theoretic, educational and clinical practice perspectives. Among topics that were focused on through keynote speeches, symposia and workshops were: •Body and story of life  •Palliative care in the community setting  •Education of medical students and GPs where the patients are •Salutogenesis: How to create a healthy orientation in community.
