Close to Home: Medical Education outside the University Hospital

David Price is Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. He has been instrumental in helping to create the inter-professional academic Family Health Team including physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, dieticians and pharmacists. This has been accomplished, in large part, by expanding the training sites to partnering communities in the districts distant from the university campus in Hamilton city. McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences is unique as the only Canadian university that combines, in one Faculty, schools of medicine, nursing, rehabilitation sciences, and the programs of midwifery, bachelor of health sciences, physician assistant and postgraduate health sciences education. This is a specific initiative to train members of the medical team in a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to develop effective and efficient health care.

Experience from McMaster University, was an important source of inspiration when a new School of Medicine was established in Tromsø in 1973. David Price, during visits to Norway in 2008 and 2009, has documented that the educational programmes at McMaster is s still among the most innovative in the world. This is why he is invited to Tromsø in 2011
