Workshop: Lifelong learning in general practice: how to read and use research literature

02.05.2011

As GPs we often experience difficulties in keeping up-to-date. At times we feel we reach the outer boundaries of our knowledge. There is a lot of information and scientific articles available, but a lot of the research is neither relevant nor valid.

The practice of medicine in which the busy physician finds, assesses, and implements methods of diagnosis and treatment on the basis of the best available current research and clinical expertise, and combines this with the needs and preferences of the patient, is termed evidence-based medicine. By learning and practicing the principles of evidence-based medicine, GPs will have a tool to assist life-long learning in practice. Based on the questions that arise in daily practice, we can learn by doing.

A group of GPs from Norway, Denmark and Finland will give a workshop on the basics of how to read research literature critically. The workshop will be a mix of introduction in plenary, individual study, small group work and plenary discussions. After the workshop the participants should have some ideas about how to answer these questions:

• Is the research valid?
• What are the results?
• Should we apply the research in our practice?

The workshop will take place on Wednesday, June 15. The first part of the workshop is 10:45 ‐ 12:15, the second part 13:30 - 15:00.

Please register for the workshop before May 30th  at: Lifelong learning
